Bleeding is almost always a sign something needs attention. The good news: in most cases, the cause is straightforward and completely reversible.

The Most Common Cause: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is early-stage gum disease caused by plaque buildup at the gumline. It causes inflammation, redness, and bleeding — but it's entirely reversible. With proper home care and a professional clean, the gums heal completely. It hasn't yet affected the bone or ligaments holding your teeth in place.

Other Common Causes

• Brushing too hard — use a soft-bristled brush and gentle circular motions
• New flossing routine — some bleeding for the first week is normal
