Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments in the world — and one of the most misunderstood. Here are clear, evidence-based answers to the questions we hear most.

Is Professional Whitening Safe?

Yes — when carried out by a qualified dental professional or using dentist-prescribed products. Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are well-studied ingredients, and decades of clinical research confirm they do not damage enamel when used correctly. The key is professional guidance on concentration and contact time.

Does It Damage Enamel?

Studies consistently show professional whitening does not erode or thin enamel. Whitening works by oxidising organic stain molecules inside the enamel — it doesn't remove enamel structure. Problems arise only with extremely high-concentration products used too frequently, or with acidic home remedies like lemon juice that genuinely do erode enamel.

What About Sensitivity?

Temporary sensitivity affects roughly 30–40% of patients — brief, sharp twinges on cold or sweet stimuli that resolve within 24–48 hours. If you already have sensitive teeth, your dentist can use lower-concentration products and prescribe sensitivity toothpaste to use in the week before treatment.

Who Isn't a Suitable Candidate?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women (precautionary)
  • Children and teenagers under 18
  • Patients with untreated cavities or active gum disease
  • Patients with crowns or veneers on front teeth (these don't whiten)
  • Severe tetracycline staining (veneers are more effective)

In-Chair vs At-Home: What's the Difference?

How Long Do Results Last?

Most patients enjoy whiter teeth for 1–3 years. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco are the main culprits for re-staining. Results can be maintained with periodic at-home top-ups using your custom trays.
